Be sure to visit Chowgirls at the Food & Wine Experience this weekend. We're just outside The Reserve, next to Seven Sushi.
We found ourselves, literally, while flipping through the March issue of Minnesota Monthly. There we were, listed in the 2010 Readers Choice Awards for 2010. Thanks for the honor!
Finally, our hearts go out to our friends at Blackbird Cafe and Patina whose businesses were destroyed by a fire.

In case you didn't know... Zingerman's is a seemingly small delicatessen in Ann Arbor, Michigan, that keeps employees and customers ecstaticly devoted while growing a $30 million gourmet food empire. Their management philosophy embraces concepts of Servant Leadership (where bosses serve the staff), Stewardship, and Entrepreneurial Approach.
Although Zingerman's approach to quality customer service and innovative management practices are rooted in the specialty foods industry, their techniques have been applied by a wide variety of businesses, including service industries and nonprofits such as banks, insurance agencies, health care providers, museums, schools, libraries, and retailers.

KICKING OFF THE NEW YEAR WITH A BANG!
Our first good news of the year is that we've been selected as one of four preferred caterers for the Historic Minneapolis Courthouse. It's a gorgeous building filled with marble and stained glass. We're honored to be a part of their program.
And then out of the blue, we received word that Chowgirls was chosen to receive the Bride's Choice Award 2010 for catering by Martha Stewart's Wedding Wire. The award recognizes the top 5% of local wedding professionals from the WeddingWire Network who demonstrate excellence in quality, service, and professionalism. MARTHA!
We're hoping to stay on this ride, for sure!

MEDIA BLITZ
Move over, Paris and Brittney... the paparazzi are hot for Chowgirls now.
Thanks to Kelly Hailstone for a very insightful interview in Heavy Table. We're honored to be profiled in this respected journal of good food.
We had a blast working with Richard Anderson (Cherub Designs, HGTV's Decorating Cents) and his blue checked pants on a summer citrus-themed picnic for Twin Cities Luxury & Fashion. The gals at Dolce photographed the spread. Can't wait to see their pro photos, especially considering how fab our snapshots turned out. We expect the issue to hit newsstands in July.
Also in July, Minnesota Bride will announce the winners of its 2009 readers choice awards. We're elated to find out we've been nominated again. Thanks for voting for us!

GOOD COMPOSTING NEWS
Chowgirls is part of a commercial compost program through Eureka Recycling that allows us to compost the majority of our kitchen waste. 70% of our kitchen waste goes into a compost dumpster, 15% is recycled, and only 10% of our waste ends up in a landfill!
As of the end of March, all the restaurants, co-ops, and caterers in this program have composted 208.12 tons of food waste and non-recyclable paper, and recycled 113.47 tons of bottles, can, and papers. Collectively, we are diverting an average of 91% of your discards away from the trash and into new products!
The environmental impacts of this effort are huge! Using the EPA WARM calculator, Eureka converted these numbers into some interesting equivalents. Composting and recycling this much has the same impact as taking 70.5 cars off the road for a year, or providing electricity for 53.4 homes for a year! It would take 9,333 trees ten years to sequester this much carbon!
For more information about the environmental benefits of composting and recycling, see Eureka's full report.

Food Democracy Now! is a grassroots movement initiated by farmers, writers, chefs, eaters and policy advocates who recognize the profound sense of urgency in creating a new food system that is capable of meeting the changing needs of American society as it relates to food, health, animal welfare and the environment.
They are seeking signatures of people who want Obama to appoint friends of sustainable, healthy food to the USDA. The organizers of the petition (which includes big names like Michael Pollan and Alice Waters) are in talks with the Obama team and they feel that 100,000 signatures is crucial in getting what they're asking for.
At the time of this posting, there are 60,583 signatures. Time is short and we need to reach 100,000. Please take a moment to sign the petition at Food Democracy Now!
